Abby Lee Miller Loses Lifetime Series Over Racism Allegations

Lifetime is severing ties with Abby Lee Miller after being accused of making racist remarks on Dance Moms.

Back in April, Miller announced her competition series Abby’s Virtual Dance Off would be launching on the network amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Although Lifetime hadn’t officially unveiled a premiere date for the show, which welcomes dancers around the nation to submit videos to show off their skills, it was reported the series would have its 12 episodes aired this summer.

According to Entertainment Weekly, however, those plans have changed. On Friday (June 5), it was reported the network would neither be proceeding with the show nor inviting Miller to return to Dance Moms if the show is renewed for a ninth season.

The loss comes days after former dance moms, Adriana Smith and Camille Bridges, blasted the 53-year-old for making racially-insensitive remarks during their time on the show.

Among the accusations, Smith alleged Miller threw it in her face that the only reason her daughter, Kamryn, was on the show was because Dance Moms needed “a sprinkle of color.”

Camille also accused Miller of treating her daughter, Camryn, differently because of her race, claiming it was the dance instructor who “tried to spin Camryn as being the poor one and there on scholarship,” “continuously put Camryn in afros,” and appropriated Black culture while neglecting to give Black choreographers acknowledgment on the show.

In light of the mothers’ statements, Miller issued the following apology on Instagram: "I genuinely understand and deeply regret how my words have affected and hurt those around me in the past, particularly those in the Black community. To Kamryn, Adriana, and anyone else I've hurt, I am truly sorry.”
