Sarasota's new single-stream recycling program is off to an impressive start.
City officials say in the first month, crews collected more than 450 tons of recyclables.
That's a nearly 60-percent increase over the same period last year.
In some neighborhoods there is estimated 90-percent participation rate.
In March, Sarasotans were given a 65-gallon wheeled cart with a lid and were asked to use it instead of smaller recycling bins.
They can toss their recyclables into the cart without having to separate paper and plastic.
