The Martin County School Board has voted to suspend a teacher without pay for his controversial social media comments about Charlie Kirk.
Matthew Theobald, who works at Spectrum Academy and is still listed as President of the Martin County Education Association on the teachers union website, called the faith-based conservative activist a "racist" and "fear mongering neo-nazi" soon after Kirk's assassination.
Despite that, people spoke out in support of Theobald at this week's School Board meeting.
Employment attorneys say the First Amendment only protects people from being arrested for sharing opinions, not from punishment at the hands of their employers.
Theobald awaits a termination hearing.
