Pasco County, FL - A senior horse is back on her feet after Pasco County first responders joined her owner and veterinarian for an unusual rescue.
Pasco County Fire Rescue crews responded Monday to assist a 33-year-old mare that was unable to stand without help.
Members of the department’s A-Shift were dispatched to a property in San Antonio.
The response included firefighters assigned to Ladder 27, Ladder 37 and Heavy Rescue 1.
Firefighters worked with the horse’s owner and veterinarian to determine how to move the animal without causing additional injury.
Photographs released by the department showed several responders surrounding the mare as the group prepared to help her rise.
Moving a horse requires crews to account for the animal’s weight, physical condition and possible movements.
Responders must also protect the animal, its owner, veterinary personnel and emergency workers throughout the operation.
The teams remained near the mare while carefully guiding and supporting her.
Their combined effort eventually helped the horse return to an upright position and regain her footing safely, according to Pasco County Fire Rescue.
The agency did not release the horse’s name or explain why she had become unable to stand.
Officials also did not report any injuries associated with the rescue.
Pasco County Fire Rescue shared photographs after the operation and credited the owner, veterinarian and responding firefighters for coordinating their work.
The department’s crews have previously handled other animal emergencies involving horses trapped in mud or swimming pools, wildlife caught in fencing and ducklings stranded inside storm drains.
The San Antonio response concluded with the senior mare standing again while surrounded by those who assisted her.
